The liver is the largest internal and most metabolically complex organ in humans. It performs over 500 different functions including fighting off infection, neutralizing toxins, manufacturing proteins and hormones, controlling blood sugar and helping to clot the blood. The Greek word for liver is 'hepar' - that's why medical terms related to the liver often start in 'hepato'- or 'hepatic'.

At any one time, the liver contains about 10% of the blood in your body. There are over 100 different forms of liver disease caused by a variety of factors ranging from viruses and genetics to toxins and poor nutrition. The good news is that many of the most common forms of liver disease can often be prevented by understanding risk factors, taking precautions and/or making healthy lifestyle choices:

Home : Fill your cupboards and refrigerator with low fat, high fibre foods and keep salty and sugary snacks to a minimum. If planning a trip, be sure to get immunized against hepatitis A and B. Hepatitis A can be contracted through contaminated food and water. Hepatitis B is spread through direct contact with blood or body fluids. Store medications and vitamins out of reach of children or in child-proof containers. When cleaning or painting, ensure the room is well-ventilated and/or wear a mask.

Travel: Learn potential health risks and whether you need to be immunized. Many vaccinations require time to become effective or to obtain. Check if your prescription medications are up to date and whether they are legal in the country that you are visiting. Get a medical check-up at least 6-8 weeks prior to travel.

Drug Safety: Talk to your doctor about all medications or supplements - pharmaceutical and herbal - that you are taking or thinking of taking. If your doctor prescribes a long-term medication, ask for a liver test before you start the medication and after the first few weeks of taking the drug to determine how your liver is tolerating it. Never mix medication with alcohol

Safe Sex: Before you get involved in any kind of sexual activity, it’s important to know the risks and how to protect both you and your partner. Hepatitis is a liver disease that can be transmitted sexually. The most common forms are hepatitis A, B and C.

Alcohol Consumption: If you continue to drink excessively, either through binge drinking or by having multiple drinks on a daily basis, you’re making your liver work continuous overtime. The consequences of this abuse may be the destruction of liver cells, a build-up of fat deposits in your liver (fatty liver), or more seriously, liver inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis), permanent scarring (cirrhosis) or even liver cancer. If you’re a woman, don’t give in to peer pressure to drink more than you might otherwise. Women absorb more alcohol than men. If you have hepatitis or any other form of liver disease, avoid alcohol completely. Limit your alcohol consumption to one or two drinks, but never on a daily basis.

Nutrition & Exercise: The liver is vital in maintaining the body’s protein and nitrogen metabolism. Certain proteins are converted into ammonia, a toxic metabolic product, by bacteria in the intestine or during the breakdown of body protein. The ammonia must be detoxified by the liver and made into urea which is then excreted by the kidneys. If you already have liver disease, you may have to limit or even avoid certain foods or ingredients – for instance salt. If you are otherwise healthy however, there is no specific ‘liver health diet’ but your liver will be grateful for every healthy choice you make – like having a bowl of oatmeal and fruit for breakfast versus a high fat muffin. Exercise is especially important in maintaining an ideal weight for your age, gender and body type. People who are overweight or obese, run a higher risk of developing a fatty liver which can lead to fatty liver disease.
