You would not believe how your body reacts to a can of cold drink!

Extra saturated sugary soft drinks are a major contributor to health conditions such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. There are approximately 10 teaspoons of added sugar in a single can of cola. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommend consuming no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar daily, meaning drinking just one serving of cola a day could take us well above these guidelines.

Here is a good read about what happens immediately after you have a can of coke or pepsi:

  1. First 10 minutes: Your system is hit by 10 teaspoons of sugar. This quantity is more than your daily sugar intake by the guidelines set by WHO. The reason that you don’t vomit immediately is because of the phosphoric acid present in the drink.
  2. First 20 minutes: Your blood sugar is spiked and because of which insulin levels rise. Your liver then turns into action and converts sugar into fat.
  3. First 30 minutes: Your pupils dilate and blood pressure rises. At this point the liver dumps more and more sugar into the bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
  4. First 45 minutes: Your body ups the dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is a similar modus operandi to heroin.
  5. First 60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, zinc and magnesium in your intestine providing a further boost in metabolism. The increase in metabolism also grows because of the saturated levels of sugar. Also it causes increased excretion of calcium from urine.
  6. After 60 minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play now. It is now assured that you excrete calcium, zinc, sodium and magnesium that were headed to your bones. At this point you start becoming sluggish.

So this is how your body reacts to having soft drink in the first hour and after that. Although this doesn’t mean you should completely abandon drinking coke. The key to having a balanced diet is moderation and making sure you are not addicted to soft drinks. Most people are unaware of the presence and side-effects of caffeine in soft-drinks. If taken in large sums, people may experience caffeine withdrawal in the 12-24 hours after consumption, which includes symptoms such as headache, irritability and constipation.
